Synopsis
A workaholic is let out early from his current operation and drives to the woods to revisit a place from his childhood. The area being a big disappointment, he leaves. On the way back he meets Kid, a rowdy young man that lives life for what it's worth. At first he shows only disdain for the independent, Davy Crockett-dressed man, but soon finds a whole new world that is appealing in its difference from his every day life. Not only does Kid show him a new style of living, but leads him on a few wild adventures that make him a new man.
Summary
'Box of Moonlight' may not have the most interesting name, but the movie is more than great. Sam Rockwell as Kid is outrageous - just like always, and John Turturro's role as Al Fountain is just right. The story is pretty funny, but intertwines drama and child fun into it without missing a heartbeat. Rockwell continues his nudist streak and go buck naked for a good part of the film, while Keener and Blount play one funky pair of sisters. It's really a good movie and definitely shouldn't be overlooked.
Notable Quotes
"Kid! Where's the rest of your house?" -- Al
"Oh, I only bought half of it. I got a really good deal...." -- Kid
"Quick! Some guy just saw Jesus!" -- Passerby
"Only stay on the phone one minute, cause anything longer than that they can trace." -- Kid
Reviews
Stygian Films: "A fun movie boosted by Rockwell's performance as Bucky (aka. Kid), 'Box of Moonlight' is great, and the best of DeCillo's works."
E! Online: "...be on the lookout for this little charmer."
Roger Ebert: "The fact that he knows what he's doing, and how close it is to parody, adds a smile to the material."
USA Today: "Writer-director Tom DiCillo had fun [doing] 1995's Living in Oblivion, but this one is even better. It's an increasingly rare movie where you really do wonder about its characters' future lives."
Washington Post: "...there’s a charming, humanistic spirit in the movie, exemplified by Rockwell’s mischievous turn as Kid."
Los Angeles Times: "...unlike much else you're going to see this summer."
